Cologne

The Shrine of the Three Kings with the relics of Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, the city patrons of Cologne surpasses all other shrines in the Western world in terms of size and grandeur.

Archbishop Rainald von Dassel brought the mortal remains of the Three Kings to Cologne in 1164 from the conquered city of Milan. These relics made the Cathedral one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe.

Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine the Great, was a pious woman, who collected holy relics. She accumulated the bodies of the Three Magi, who were buried in different places, and brought them to Constantinople. In this city they remained until Eustorgius travelled to Constantinople to have his election as bishop confirmed by the Emperor. Eustorgius returned to Milan with the relics of the Three Magi.

The relics of the Magi were taken from Milan in 1164 by Holy Roman Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa and given to the Archbishop of Cologne, Rainald of Dassel.
